More Than Hymns is a new two-volume collection of anthems for mixed voice choirs featuring extended arrangements of existing hymn tunes, together with original anthem-style settings of the texts of several well known hymns. Of the sixteen works in this first volume, six are published here for the first time, including new arrangements by composers of today: Malcolm Archer, Rogers Covey-Crump, John Joubert, Barry Rose and Gavin Williams. This hymn of Purcell’s sets words by Dr William Fuller Lord Bishop of Lincoln and was the opening work of Henry Playford’s 1688 Harmonia Sacra. It is unclear how or when the piece would have been performed as it does not fit any liturgical function.However the hymn is untainted Purcell in style and quality. Purcell laid out the five-bar ground bass at the start of the work and shifts it only slightly and effectively for emphasis in the middle of the song.
